We’ve talked before about storing batteries, and how to do it properly. We even showed you a little trick where you can use a Styrofoam cooler to keep the temperature in check.

However, this post is here to give you a more permanent solution to storing your batteries safely.

As we’ve said a million times in these posts, heat and batteries don’t mixSo, storing your batteries in the correct temperature and be everything. It is generally recommended that you keep batteries in a “cool, dry place”, which is generally considered to be 15 degrees Celsius. -40 to 50 degrees Celsius is the extreme allowable temperature.  

In order to maintain the capacity of lead-acid batteries must be kept at full charge while being stored. Nickel-based and lithium batteries must be stored at around 40% state of charge, keeping the batteries operational and allowing self-discharge. 

The recommended conditions to store any battery in is in a “cool, dry place. We’ve covered why it’s important to store in a cool place, but why a dry one? 

Primarily to avoid the battery terminals from getting corroded from moisture. Moisture can ruin the quality of your batteries and result in irreparable damage. 

A storage cupboard in your house or garage is an ideal place to store batteries.
